PostHeaderIcon What Are Some Rock Bands That Have A lot of Really Grand or Epic Songs?

I am looking for more rock music that is really "grand". Like long songs with a lot going on, such as having a ton of different instruments, really long (9 or 10 minutes) or just really complex arrangements.

For example, Oasis had a few songs like that, especially on Be Here Now, so did Broken Social Scene, or Polyphonic Spree.

Any suggestions on music like that?

If you’re looking for something a little newer, Mastodon is AMAZING!

They have a new CD coming out Tuesday ("crack the skye"). You can listen to it on their myspace. http://www.myspace.com/mastodon

Check out the last couple Steely Dan albums (especially Aja). By that point, they were basically a rock/fusion outfit. The title track from Aja is a 10 minute long, really complex chord cycle featuring a stunning performance from Steve Gadd on drums, Larry Carlton on guitar, and Wayne Shorter playing a rare session date on tenor sax.
Led Zeppelin also has long, crazy complex tunes. Check out things like Achilles’ Last Stand, Kashmir, The Song Remains the Same, Carouselambra, In The Light, and of course Stairway
Everything Pink Floyd does is one grand mindf***. I would suggest getting a copy of Dark Side of the Moon, getting stoned, and just listening.
Allman Brothers Band isn’t exactly grand, but if you’re looking for 10 minutes of jam, that’s a good way to go.

I was really hoping that somebody would have said Faith No More by now. You know. . .Epic. . .the song. . .okay, yeah, never mind.

I recommend Porcupine Tree, on a more serious note.

♥♥LED ZEPPELIN~Their live performances included very lengthy and absolutely spectacular songs consisting of all types of improvisations! I feel you should absolutely purchase How The West Was Won, an utterly stellar live album of their, bursting with epic tunes that are full of majesty :D Moreover, there is an ample amount of studio work by them that I feel you would very, very much enjoy~the magical Achilles Last Stand with lyrics beautifully inspired by Greek mythology, Stairway to Heaven, In The Light, and the list flows ever on-I think each of their studio albums consist of songs that have very grand and long FABULOUS musical solos♥♥♥
♥☺♥PINK FLOYD♥ ♥♥ Their songs include very fascinating lyrics with gorgeous instrumentals!
♥Allman Brothers Band~I think you will absolutely LOOVE In Memory of Elizabeth Reed~a jazz influenced instrumental and Mountain Jam 8))
♥of course Steely Dan is an immensely talented group of individuals and their albums are indicative of that-the title song on Aja is a luminous illustration of this♥ They often found very gifted musicians in studios and included them in their songs, and these musical virtuosos’ work added to the grandness of Steely Dan’s pieces 8)
♥♥Jethro Tull-Their songs are so lovely, and make me think of Tolkienesque scenes, such as "Songs From The Wood" with their flutes and magical lyrics :-)

    Please do enjoy! :-)

    LOVE ALWAYS ♥☺♥ 8–D
